Do you remember the day you married your spouse? When you reflect upon that day, can you recall your wedding vows? Do you remember what you promised? Did you vow to love, cherish, and to stand by your spouse through the worst, and best of circumstances?
Like most people who marry, couples enter into matrimony with many dreams, hopes, and expectations. Oftentimes, our parents’ marriage was the one we witnessed the most so we each bring certain expectations with us to the altar.
If we thought something was done well by our parents in their own marriage, we may find ourselves trying to imitate their behavior in our own marriage. However, if they did some things we felt were detrimental, degrading, or unproductive, we secretly promised ourselves that we would never do those kinds of things in our own.
When you reflect back on what you promised in your wedding vows, did you ever believe that you would have to think about things like:
- Making dinner, even when you would feel exhausted?
- Taking out the trash without having to be asked?
- Keeping the car in good working order?
- Watching the children so your wife could go out with the girls?
Recently, I found this video clip created by a husband and wife comedy team called Acts of Renewal. In it, they re-enact their wedding day with the minister asking them some very interesting questions as they are about to make their promises to each other. While some of the questions are rather funny, they are quite true-to-life.
So, if you have 3:46, I encourage you to view it. It’s good for a small dose of reality!
